The mountain landscapes of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are a vital refuge for snow leopards and other endangered wildlife, yet growing pressures such as poaching and habitat degradation threaten their survival. This project strengthens cross-border conservation by training protected area rangers, improving wildlife monitoring and protection, and fostering lasting cooperation to safeguard one of Central Asia's most important biodiversity hotspots.

Protection of the Snow Leopard in Kyrgyzstan

With only about 300 snow leopards remaining in Kyrgyzstan, this project supports the construction of a modern rehabilitation centre in Terek to improve the care and protection of rescued animals. The initiative also includes an environmental education centre to promote conservation and help safeguard the species' future.

Snow leopards in Tajikistan face increasing challenges due to the growing population of mountain communities and the impacts of climate change. The conservation programme led by NABU in cooperation with ANCOT focuses on raising awareness of the importance of snow leopards and implementing a compensation scheme to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote coexistence.
