New Snow Leopard Rehabilitation Centre in Terek
Snow leopards are among the most endangered big cats in the world. In Kyrgyzstan, where around 1,400 animals roamed the mountain ranges in the 1980s, only about 300 snow leopards are estimated to remain today. Although hunting them has long een prohibited by law, snow leopards continue to be poached, and their habitat is increasingly threatened by human activity.
To support the protection of snow leopards, NABU, in close cooperation with NABU Kyrgyzstan, is building a new rehabilitation centre in Terek, located in the Kemin District of the Chui Region. The new centre will address the challenges associated with the current facility’s remote location from Bishkek and replace the outdated and inadequate enclosures. In addition, an environmental education centre will be established alongside the rehabilitation facility to raise awareness about snow leopard conservation.
During the first month of the project, the new site was cleared and the access road to the future centre was repaired. In the following months, the roof and the main building will be renovated.
The opening of the new rehabilitation centre is scheduled for October 2021.
