The project involves planting a variety of tree seedlings in the Liberec region, primarly beeches, oaks, and firs, to improve the age and species diversity of local forests. Young seedlings must also be protected from wildlife through the installation of protective fencing.
Following a long period of cultivating even-aged, monoculture forest stands, mainly consisting of spruce trees, and the widespread use of clear-cutting practices, more environmentally friendly forestry methods have been reintroduced in recent years. We support species-diverse forest stands, which are essential for creating more natural, resilient, and healthier forests that can better retain water in the landscape. The Ivan Dejmal Foundation cworks closely with Mr. Jan Duda, a senior expert in sustainable forestry practices, to increase the proportion of fir and deciduous tree species in local forests.
Several suitable sites and tree species have already been selected for planting. Seedlings will be ordered in spring and supplied as needed. Protective fences will also be constructed to safeguard young firs and oaks from wildlife. Depending on climatic conditions, the seedlings will be planted in autumn 2021. In the following years, ongoing maintenance will be carried out, including pruning, the application of repellents, and fence repairs.
